On the last day of our trip six months ago, we were supposed to go to Sitges, but we took the wrong train and somehow ended up in the neighboring town. We were pretty cheerful about it at the time, figuring that stumbling into somewhere unexpected was a kind of luck too.

Today, we finally made it to Sitges, ticking off the stop we’d missed six months ago.

After getting off the train, we started wandering around town. We didn’t really have a destination in mind. We checked the map, saw that the station wasn’t far from the sea, and thought: let’s head for the waterfront, then. Along the way, we took in the town’s buildings and the people strolling through the streets.

Before long, we reached the waterfront. This is the kind of place where you can be walking down a street, turn a corner, and suddenly see the whole sweep of the coastline. One second, you’re surrounded by white buildings; the next, the view switches straight to a vast expanse of sea.

We also happened to catch the golden hour around sunset, and for a moment I had no idea how to describe it. It was just so beautiful. Honestly, if I hadn’t actually seen it with my own eyes, I would have been 100% convinced it was AI-generated. Those rich, saturated colors were almost ridiculously over the top. The photos below are 100% straight from my phone, with no color adjustments or Photoshop.

A Stunning Sunset over the Sea in Sitges, Spain

We stood by the sea for nearly half an hour, until the sun had completely set. After watching the sunset, we headed to the station to catch the train back to Barcelona. As we walked through town, we saw lots of Christmas decorations. Christmas was still about two or three weeks away, but the streets were already full of festive touches, so we got an early taste of the Christmas atmosphere.

It was already getting late when we got back to Barcelona. It gets dark very early in Europe in winter, and we made it back into the city that evening.

There happened to be a group of people dancing sevillanas in the square. We stood nearby and watched for a while, then headed back to where we were staying.

That trip to Sitges that had been a “we were supposed to” ever since we took the wrong train six months ago finally happened, in the glow of the sunset.
